Anderson, Toston and Maria (Nelson)

(Mildred Kjome)

Tosten Gulliksen was born on the Selsteigen farm in Rollag Paris, Numedal, Norway 30 Dec 1836 to Gullik Anderson Selsteigen and Kristi Torsteinsdtr. Stabekk. Kristi died in 1838 leaving her husband alone with two young children: Ingeborg and Torstein (age two years). Little Ingeborg immigrated to America in 1842 when she was only nine years old. That year 53 people emigrated from

Rollag Parish, among them her cousin, Margit Olsdtr. Gylte. Torstein Gulliksen came to America in 1854 with his father, but Gullik died of cholera when they got to Chicago, leaving Tosten to continue on alone to his aunts in Winneshiek Co., IA. Tosten came to Lansing and then on foot to the N.N. Kjomme family in Highland Twp. He took the Kjomme name until the time of his marriage, after which he used the name Anderson.

Marie H. Nelson and Tosten Anderson

On 4 Sep 1864 Tosten married Maria Halsteinsdtr. Nelson born 5 Jul 1843, a sister of his cousin Nels’ wife Johanna. They owned the farm south of Nels and Johanna Kjomme. They had three children of their own: Gilbert, Martha and Thea; Maria was a second mother to Andrew Kjome when his mother died. The Andersons continued to have a close relationship with the Kjomme family throughout their lives. Tosten was a Republican. He held various township offices, including that of trustee. Maria hosted the first Big Canoe Lutheran Ladies Aid Society meeting and became its first president, secretary and treasurer. The women ofter walked several miles to attend their meetings. They did sewing of garments and other items which were later sold at auction, the proceeds of which went to mission work. The first such sale was held in Maria’s home. When the Highland congregation was formed in 1894, the Andersons became members.

In 1896 Tosten and Maria turned their farm over to their son Gilbert. Their farming venture had been a success; they could retire to Decorah and buy a home on East Water Street across from the Decorah Creamery. They became members of First Lutheran Church in Decorah. In 1910 their daughter Martha died in childbirth, leaving five little girls. Tosten died 14 Apr 1913. Thelma Ness, one of the younger of the children, came to live with her Grandma Anderson. Later Thelma and her husband, Arnold Digre, would provide a home for Maria in her declining years. Maria continued to be active in the Ladies Aid until her death 24 May 1930. Tosten and Maria Anderson are buried in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah.

Their children were: Gilbert A. Anderson; Martha Christine (m. O.J. Ness); and Thea Henrietta (m. Gustav N. Kjome).
